Quote for Tuesday

“We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart.”

— Pema Chödrön

I’m busy with lots of work at my job this week, so I may not have time to write, but just wanted to take a moment to share some wisdom from Pema Chodron.  Have a great day!

Strong, Happy, Serene, and Generally Badass

I decided to discontinue the whole Strong is the New Skinny thing.  I’ll leave the tag up so those posts are still accessible in the tag cloud over there to the right. When I started the Strong is the New Skinny project it was an empowering new perspective, but for me it’s run its course I think.  Part of the point all along was to love my body as it is NOW, and to feel at home and at peace in this one body I’ve been given in which I get to experience life on this planet, and that was getting lost for me. Off to Spend the Weekend in a Van with Sweaty Coworkers

I probably won’t have time to post again this weekend, I’m off to run my part (13 miles total for me) of a ~200 mile race with 11 of my coworkers.  I’m prepared with my Janna-friendly energy bar replacements.

I’ve got far more food that I’ll really need, but I want to avoid all temptation.  What am I taking:

  • Homemade beef jerky
  • Paleo-ish trail mix (raw macadamia nuts, raw almonds, coconut chips, and a few organic dried figs)
  • Lara Bars
  • Raw Spirulina Chips (ingredents: sesame seeds, coconut, dates, bananas, spirulina)
  • Plantain chips (cooked in Palm oil, slightly questionable, but better than canola or soy)

Have a great weekend!

Baby Gift Tutorial

I posted today over at Ekotone, my other blog with my good friend Matthew Jaramillo.  Ekotone is a joint venture about our takes on the DIY, homemade and crafting lifestyle. Today’s post is a tutorial about how to make a fairly easy but still homemade gift for a new baby.  It’s a cute little hooded baby towel, enjoy!

That Nasty Bugger Carbohydrate

Continuing my weekly installment in the Strong is the New Skinny Body Transformation Challenge.  Click here to see all posts on this topic.

I finished Gary Taubes’ most recent book Why We Get Fat this week.  It was a reasonably easy read, and I thoroughly recommend it.

The book includes lots of research, but is not nearly as heavily referenced as Good Calories, Bad Calories, so if you want to be hit over the head with the research and science, read that one instead.

Why We Get Fat is not about the Paleo or Primal diet, and in fact it’s really not a diet book at all. Rather, it’s an examination of the biology and physiology behind human adiposity (fattening), and a review of why we’ve come to believe certain things about human nutrition and adiposity that are wrong (mainly that dietary fat is bad for you, and carbohydrates are necessary), and what the science tells us is true instead. The Next Level: Food-as-Fuel and Vulnerability

Continuing my weekly installment in the Strong is the New Skinny Body Transformation Challenge.  Click here to see all posts on this topic.

As I mentioned last week, I’ve just come to the end of a two-week “break” in my diet.  I put the word break in quotes because it wasn’t a free-for-all, it was more of a time where I specifically stopped doing any particular plan, and practiced just eating what I felt like when I felt like it.

In addition to the lessons around which foods are worth eating that I discussed last week, it’s also been a great opportunity to reflect on two closely related things: how I want to fuel my body for the rest of my life and how I want to deal with my emotional issues around eating.
